Palm Beach - Screaming Current – Commercial Lobster Dive 8-6-24
First day of the regular lobster season and we have marginal conditions. A screaming current, visibility of less than we are used to and a bit of wind and storms in the area cutting down on light on the bottom and just making things more of a challenge.
I had a tough day, found a lot of lobsters with eggs and did only two tanks.

Recent Sigh Seeing Dive. no spearfishing. Some might find it interesting. Depth is 185-190 ft, I used a big steel tank with air and a 13 cuft pony bottle.

Anchor Recovery is a Challenge

We found a very nice stainless anchor and chain and about 200 ft of new rope. Sending it up on a lift bag was more excitement than it should have been, got tangled in some loose rope. Secret Palm Beach Wreck in 85 ft of water. Anyone want to buy an anchor?

Pretty quickly I realized it looked like a GWS, I tried to get as close as possible, but it was swimming up into the current and I was towing a surface float from my scooter. Glad you were able to recover your float. Without that the boat would never be able to find you. Way to tough out bad conditions.
Yeah it would suck to lose the scooter. I have an extra smb to deploy if I lose the float.
I was out this day as well. Current was ripping ! Worst opening day in a while as far as bugs go.
hope it gets better and the lobsters move around a little
Man it's hard to chase bugs in screaming current! All those guys that say using snares makes the job easier, has never tried to grab bugs in screaming current. Tickle stick and net is so much more efficient when you're kicking like mad or grabbing rock to stay at your rock and land a bug. The only saving grace is when you find a huge ledge and can get down out of the current and work the bugs.
Yeah, I like the net, but I know a lot of people who are better than me and they use a looper/noose. It takes a while to learn a particular technique, and it makes it hard to try something else. Thanks for the comment.-
John Wayne’s method is the quickest Just shove your hand in the hole and pull them out

yeah I got bit again today, luckily it was a minor one.
Happend to me when I was on a dive in the keys reached in a hole for a lobster I got bit in the forearm big chunk blood everywhere was no fun....
I'm recovered now, just a little more scared!

Whoa, knifing the nurse shark was kinda intense, surprised it came back after the first skin slice......I had an aggressive nurse shark encounter last year in Pompano. I was not Lionfish hunting, spearing and lobstering, so I only had my trusty gen 3 Mako speargun and of course a knife strapped to my calf. It came at me at least 8 times and a light jab to the nose with the speargun would turn it away, but it persisted. I'm not really worried about the nurse sharks, they don't attack and they're normally slow and very mellow. Black tip reef sharks are a different thing. Once seeing several and them coming that close over and over, it's safety stop and jet time. I would never pull the trigger on a shark unless it's a last resort or I am at the boat and about to hop out because once you pull the trigger on a spear without a powerhead, it's anything goes (and usually does). So far, have not had to pull the trigger yet, plan to keep it that way unless I'm the one that's provoked. lol

Seems to me they are just attracted by the fish you're hunting? Any shark experts here that can chime in?
well the first shark was following me before I took the fish.
Now I see why this sport is outlawed in a lot of places. Looks like a brutal way to fish and not very respectful.

So it's OK to hook and line everything and anything until you get the target fish? I respectfully disagree. Responsible spearing is selective and ensures the target (and legal sized) species is harvested. (note the key word - responsible)
It's actually the most sustainable way to fish. Look into it more.

The best part is 2 weeks later the same damn nurse shark approached me on that spot, but he never got really close. I was amazed and relieved that it appeared to be pretty healed up already.

Sorry man but solo diving and penetrating a wreck at 190’ is more than foolish. Thinking this is a good idea is not wise. All professional divers would agree. Maybe you have a death wish. Good luck and I wish you safe diving.

Looks like amazone. I did the rankin Sunday the 9th, 63 degrees. 50 ft vis but non life on it. Only got 10 lions off it and a 45” AJ. Was hoping to load up on lions and mangroves.
Good guess, I 've only seem the Rankine once and there was no fish on it when I was there.

We eat them sometimes, but generally they get sold to the market. They are pretty highly prized as a food source. I dislike cleaning them, since I get pricked way too often - apparently I am too clumsy.
